If you’ve thought of writing a book someday (or already have), you’re in good company. Statistically, 80% of the population believe they have a book inside them. The experts say it’s important to be a good storyteller, to be curious and determined, and to have a love of learning, among other things.
So far, so good. I’m not sure when thoughts of my new book, Lettering From A to Z, officially began, but my love of learning goes way back. And teaching calligraphy for over 20 years was a new level of learning all over again.
While in college, I had a quote lettered on my wall: “Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” (Margaret Runbeck.) Perhaps that began my art journey. I never planned to “arrive.” I liked to travel.
My clients and students have had a great impact on me as an artist. I’ve always enjoyed collaboration as well as solitude, the genuine interest in asking why or why not, exploring and encouraging others. I celebrate an unexpected email that shares a student’s “aha” moment of discovery. I treasure thoughtful, handmade cards.
So last week my new book was delivered! It’s 8.5×11 inches, 92 pages, full color and perfect bound. I wrote my book to celebrate each step of YOUR journey. It’s written in a conversational style, but has intention, purpose. Ha, perhaps goals?! I’d like everyone to make amazing creative discoveries. I reference the rich history of calligraphy in today’s hand lettering freedom. There are 9 exemplars, from traditional and modern styles, including my complete licensed alphabet, Letters by Phawnda.
In the Letters by Phawnda alphabet, you can copy an uncolored letter for the meaning of names, like “Kassie”, below. (tutorial included). These make lovely gifts.
It’s also practical. Materials and sources are explained. Tips for success (secrets!) are unveiled. What to do with all your practice takes shape in easy and fun projects—making and sharing are the best parts of calligraphy!
Best of all, I’ll be giving away one copy of my book on OCTOBER 2ND to a U.S.A. resident ONLY. Here’s how to enter:
